Ferry or Catamaran to Hvar? Here's How to Choose the Right One
Getting to Hvar is easier than it first appears, but choosing the right ferry or catamaran can be confusing. The island has two main ports, several passenger catamarans from Split and multiple ferry operators, so it's not always obvious which ticket you should book.
After years of meeting guests at Hvar Town, Stari Grad and Sućuraj, this is the advice we give most often.
Ferry or Catamaran?
The best option depends on whether you're travelling with a car and where you're staying on the island.
If you're travelling without a car, a catamaran from Split is usually the fastest and easiest choice. During the season, passenger catamarans arrive in both Hvar Town and Stari Grad, so it's worth checking which port is closer to your accommodation.
If you're bringing a car, you'll need the Split to Stari Grad port. It's the island's main vehicle ferry route, with larger ships that tend to operate more reliably when the weather becomes rough.
If you're driving from Dubrovnik or southern Dalmatia, the Drvenik to Sućuraj ferry is another excellent option. Arriving on the eastern side of Hvar can save a considerable amount of driving time.
Which Port Should You Choose?
If you're staying in Hvar Town, the catamaran directly to Hvar is usually the most convenient option.
If you're staying in Stari Grad, a catamaran to Stari Grad saves you an extra transfer, while the vehicle ferry is the obvious choice if you're travelling by car.
For accommodation in Jelsa, Vrboska, Zavala, Ivan Dolac or Sveta Nedjelja, arriving in Stari Grad is often quicker and more practical than travelling via Hvar Town.
The fastest boat isn't always the best choice. Depending on where you're staying, the ferry can actually save time and unnecessary transfers. If you're unsure which route to book, just ask us before you buy your ticket.
Summer Delays Are Normal
Minor delays are a normal part of summer travel to Hvar. Strong winds, busy ports and the occasional technical issue can affect both ferries and catamarans, especially during July and August.
That's why we monitor every arrival in real time. If your ferry or catamaran is running late, there's no need to call us. We'll already know and adjust your pickup accordingly.
Where Will We Meet You?
During the summer, several ferries and catamarans often arrive within minutes of each other at both Hvar Town and Stari Grad. Finding the right exit or meeting point isn't always as straightforward as you'd expect.
Your driver will be waiting at the arrival point with a name sign, help with your luggage and escort you directly to the vehicle. No searching the waterfront, no confusion and no dragging your bags around the harbour.
