Hvar Lavender Fields: When to See Lavender in Bloom

Hvar is famous for its beaches, sunshine and vineyards, but for generations it has also been known as Croatia's lavender island. Every early summer, the stone terraces in the island's interior briefly turn purple as thousands of lavender plants come into bloom.

The flowering season is much shorter than most visitors expect. Arrive at the right time and you'll experience one of the island's most beautiful landscapes.

When Does Lavender Bloom on Hvar?

The exact timing depends on the weather each year, but lavender usually blooms from late June to early July.

Not all fields flower at the same time. Lower elevations tend to bloom first, while the higher hills around the island remain colourful for a little longer.

If you're visiting during this period, just ask us where the lavender looks best. Since we're driving around the island every day, we always know which fields are currently at their peak.

The Best Lavender Fields on Hvar

The island's best known lavender fields are found between Velo Grablje, Brusje and the hills above Stari Grad.

Velo Grablje is Hvar's historic lavender village, with beautiful stone terraces overlooking the south coast. It's one of the island's most photographed locations during lavender season.

A few kilometres further lies Brusje, where flowering often lasts a little longer and visitor numbers are usually much lower.

If you're travelling later in July, the higher ground above Stari Grad sometimes offers the last remaining lavender in bloom.

Lavender season only lasts a few weeks. Even if you miss the peak flowering, the scenic drive between Stari Grad, Velo Grablje and Hvar Town is one of the most beautiful routes on the island.

Buy Lavender and Local Honey

Along the road between Velo Grablje, Brusje and Hvar Town you'll often find small family run stalls selling products made on the island.

Local lavender honey, olive oil, essential oils, soaps and dried lavender bouquets make excellent souvenirs and are often less expensive than those sold in shops around the harbour.

The Best Time of Day to Visit

Late afternoon is the perfect time to explore Hvar's lavender fields.

The light becomes softer, the colours more vibrant and the scent of lavender fills the warm air. Many visitors combine a visit to the lavender fields with a swim earlier in the day or dinner in Hvar Town afterwards.

If you'd rather enjoy the scenery without driving the island's narrow roads, we can arrange a private transfer to the most beautiful lavender fields and bring you back whenever you're ready.
